This is an ocean pond that formed in the middle of the beach at the famous Pipeline in Hawaii. This usually happens when there have been some fairly big waves for only a day or so. The short period of waves brings the water surging over the front of the beach sand and runs sideways along the beach where it drains back into the ocean, keeping it fresh. If the swell would stay consistent, the waves would simply erode the front of the beach down and the pond would not even be formed.
The sand that forms the beach in front of Pipeline goes through an annual cycle. As the winter season begins, huge waves will consistently take sand off the beach & into the channel, until a point that there is hardly any beach left in front of the houses. During spring, little by little, the sand begins to come back and form the beautiful beaches that Hawaii is known for. In between that time, are the magic little moments like this. Hope you enjoy.
Thanx for viewing.
Aloha, Mana
As much as I've been to Pipe, I never knew it could fill up like this.
Thanks for taking the time to explain how it happens. I find stuff like that so interesting.
My favorite part of this photo isn't the shot itself, but the framing.
Its a perfect example of how we need to pay more attention to other elements often overlooked.
Lovely vivid colors and contrasts, the capture and the composition are very good.
I love the blue and white of the sky, and the coloration of the water...also, the perspective angle is quite nicely done. congrats!
