There are places in Hawaii that are still rich with Hawaiian culture, you may not always find them on a map, but they are out there. Sometimes you have to wonder off the beaten path to seek your prize. Its the adventure that can be both fun and rewarding, so seek and ye shall find.

Loved the story of this garden.......brings back so many memories, I can remember so many days going to Yokes early in the morning and it looked exactly like this.......one time I was riding my motorcycle to the end of the road and I see something out of the corner of my eye over the ocean........so I look and here comes a F-16 I think, flying in towards Makua at probably 400 mph...........straight into the valley, shoots a fucking missile into the back of the valley...........unreal, I couldn't believe it! Then it did a u turn and flew out, I couldn't even believe my eyes.........it was going so fast I couldn't believe it could make that turn........

So yeah, Mana you captured the true essence of Makua.........if the people of the world only knew the TRUTH about Hawaii, they would cry!

Listen to Braddah IZ the song Hawaii 78............my all time favorite song........it should be playing while viewing this shot!

aloha nui!

Very beautiful shot, is that a seal in the foreground or a rock? You got the stylee bro! I have always loved being in Hawaii. When I went the last time in 3/17-24/2000 it was my B-day on the 20th. My women and I had an amazing stay. We met a lot of very nice people and I can't wait to go back to capture some color like this. Have a great day Mana I think you shoot some incredible photography, Mahalo Mana.

This is stunning. I love the contrast of the rocks against the mountain background. Makes you feel as if you're lying there looking at that yourself. Great shot!

whoa! it may seem short on words, but your gallery, and every single shot you have submitted on here is amazing. you have a wonderful technique, and a talent that lets you photograph so many things. I love your work!!! When I look at this piece at first, my eyes are drawn to the rocks, but the entire picture is the point of the piece. The rocks, mountains, beach, ocean... everything. I love it! I cannot wait to see more of your photographs!

Thank you very much for the wonderful compliment. I will reward you with the story behind this photo:
This is Makua Valley, it is a very sacred place to the Hawaiians, that has been occupied by the military for quite sometime. The stones can be found in the middle, near the beach (the only area accessible to the public in this valley). The stones are only a very small part of a very well designed Hawaiian garden. An elderly woman with cancer, has devoted her life to rescuing endangered species of native plants from the nearby mountains, which often come under severe brush fires. Upon rescuing these rare plants, she brings them back to health and adds them into this unique garden, further accentuated with various Hawaiian artifacts. Although she is not Hawaiian, she embodies the essence of the true Hawaiian spirit.
