Having Fun

Thu Nov 29, 2012, 3:48 AM

Here's a little segment I made of me and my friends driving go carts in Hawaii. Filmed with 2 GoPro cameras.
Check it out, it came out pretty cool.  [link]
You can watch it in 1080 or 720 for high quality, if your computer can handle it.

Groups

Wed Sep 12, 2012, 2:16 PM

The groups on DA are a great thing, they really help to promote people's art. Getting submissions declined can always be tough, but it is a part of the game. However, when I get a submission declined for the wrong reason, I don't take it too well. Sometimes when this happens, I feel I need to take a stand, which never turns out good. It seems I always run into some idiot who does not know shit about underwater photography and they think they can tell me how to make it better, well F*ck that...homey don't play that. I have left a few groups because of ignorance and I think its time for me to leave another one.

Just for the record, finding wild dolphins and swimming out to them...not easy. Finding them in clean water...not easy. Getting close enough to them to get a nice shot...difficult. Doing it with a fisheye lens...extremely difficult. Doing all of that with this kind of quality...good luck.
Now you have just a little insight on what it takes to get a shot like this.
Ok, my rant is over, tell me what you guys think.

A New Beginning

Sun Dec 11, 2011, 11:45 PM

So I recently started checking into my DA account and started uploading new images. I just got me a premium membership, which should make it much easier for me to view all the great artwork that is out there as well. I will be slowly making my way around to check out my old friends as well as new ones. That's all for now...aloha and thanks for all your supprt.

Big Wave Event

Thu Dec 17, 2009, 11:55 PM

Aloha everyone, it's been awhile since my last journal entry. I wanted to thank Anna :icon7thlibra: for getting me a 3 month subscription, it was very sweet of her. Anyway, I wanted to share a couple of images from a recent big wave event called the Quicksilver Eddie Aikau Invitational.

Every year, the invited competitors gather for a special ceremony for the event. The event itself is not held every year, as the waves need to be at least 20 feet.

We were blessed with a huge swell this year that provided waves big enough to hold the event. Featured here is Sunny Garcia and the eventual winner, Greg Long.

Here's me with a couple of my boys, while watching the contest...that's me on the far right.

This is Reef Macentosh wiping out on a big one. This sequence goes along with my latest submission.

Anyway, that's it for now. I also want to thank all my new watchers, as well as all my dedicated followers, thanks for all the comments and favs.

Aloha, Mana

New DD and other news

Sun Jul 6, 2008, 11:16 PM

So anyway, a few days ago I recieved my third DD.

I am really proud of this one because the image represents the work I do from the water. With that said, I wanted to thank :iconrom3o: for suggesting it and :iconevanhwong: for featuring it.
This image has now become my most popular image in my gallery with 6890 views and 449 favs (86 before the DD).
I have always taken pride in thanking the people that support me with favs and I will continue to do so the best I can. Currently I am backed up with over 800 favs and its pretty cool...haha.
Thank you to everyone for your support, I really appreciate it.

Here are my previous two DD's:

In other news:
I think I got 10th and 11th place on Surfline's May Photo Challenge [link]
I think having 2 of the 20 images in the contest worked against me, because my supporters were getting divided. I am sure I would have done a lot better with only one image in the contest...oh well. Either way, thank you to everyone who supported me.

I have also been uploading images on Magicseaweed.com [link]
One of my latest images rose to the top very quickly and was featured as one of the weeks top rated shots, as you can see in the frame grab below:

This website is really cool to upload on if you are a surf photog or even just a beach enthusiast. Eyecatching images can get a lot of views in a very short amount of time, lets compare:
558 views on DA since July 1.

Over 5000 views on Magicseaweed since July 2.
[link]

Anyone can rate photo's on this site, but members can also fav and comment.
View more of my images on Magicseaweed [link]

There is a new club starting up :iconhdiclub: High Dynamic Inc. Even though I do not do HDR myself, that does not mean that I want to be left out of the loop when it comes to HDR. Anyway, check it out for your self by joining today.
That's it for now.

Surfline update: two of my photo's were chosen for the May Photo Challenge on Surfline.com. Please support me by voting for one of my shots, #8 and #18 are mine [link]
I kind of wish I only had one image in the challenge, because now my votes are getting split between two images, but whatever.

So last week I went to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, it was an awesome trip and I really had a lot of fun...here's a recap of what I submitted from that trip so far:

In other news, I recently broke 25,000 page views...I know, whatever. Who the hell is counting anyways. But seriously, thank you to everyone who stops by, I really do appreciate it.

Here are a few selections that I have recently faved...I hope you enjoy them as much as I do:

Surf-n-Skate

Sun Feb 10, 2008, 2:02 AM

Surf-n-skate...that's what we did today.
Started the day off with a little skate session with 2 of my best friends, TJ and Tory Barron.
:thumb64700809:
This is a shot of the 2 brothers together.

Heres TJ boosting a little air.

This is TJ surfing.

Here is Tory popping it off the coping.

This is Tory surfing.

After the skate session, it was time to get wet.

TJ just bought a little boat off of craigs list and needed to test it out.

Tory took out his wave ski and was anxious to do some tow-in surfing.

The waves were pretty big and the boys got some awesome rides. They set me up on my own wave ski so I had complete mobility out there, it was really good practice.

My latest submission from this session.

TJ Barron is sponsored by Billabong. He leaves tomorrow for a month to compete in several World Qualifying Series events in Brazil.

We started the day off at a skate park and we finished the day off at a backyard skate bowl. Surf-n-skate....that's how we roll.
All comments and questions are welcome and appreciated.

Welcome to the Pipeline

Thu Jan 10, 2008, 1:47 AM

The infamous Pipeline in Hawaii has been asleep for most of the winter so far, but today she awoke and made her presence reign supreme.
There is no way to really describe the drama that is unfolding before my very eyes, as I watch some of my best friends pull into huge barrels of water. This is the best way I know how to try and relate what I witnessed today...

...please tell me what you think.

Mana Goes To Maui

Sun Nov 25, 2007, 2:37 PM

So I just got back from a quick surf trip to Maui. Maui is one of the 7 main islands in the Hawaiian Island chain. I went to Honolua Bay, which has been said to be one of the most perfect waves in the world.

It didn't get as big as we were hoping, but it was still pretty awsome.
Here's a quick glimpse of some of the beautiful scenery at Honolua Bay.

Here's a view of the surf from across the bay...

Here's me working hard...

...it's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

Here's my latest submission from this trip...

Thanks for tuning in.

Move Of The Week

Sun Nov 18, 2007, 1:19 AM

Right now is the busiest time of year for me, this is when the waves in Hawaii usually get there best. So far, the waves have not gotten very big, but it has been good for shooting, with lots of pro surfers around. I just upgraded to the new Canon 40D and I am pretty stoked with it. Anyway, here's the move of the week by Jordy Smith.

Another Week, Another Peek

Sun Oct 7, 2007, 11:08 PM

So there has not really been any decent surf to speak of lately, but things could pick up at anytime. I have been practicing from the water, even though it has been small, like this shot below.

I was also able to get a shot to enter :iconinebriantia:'s contest. [link]
This is my entry

Here's the sequence...

all submissions for the contest so far [link]

So I recently had the opputunity to borrow my friends studio lighting set up and its been really fun. Since I don't have an actual studio to set the lights up in, I had to settle for an empty room at the Volcom House. They had just finished painting the walls with these really kool skulls and stuff. I didn't want to fill my gallery up with this kind of stuff, but I did want to share some shots with you guys. Here's a quick sample of the kool lifestyle shots we did.

This is Braden Dias, founder and owner of the Pipeline Posse [link]
Good quality lifestyle shots are always useful for the surf magazines.

Called up one of my models to do some portfolio work.

This is Kealii Mamala, a big wave surfer from the Big Island of Hawaii.

Some more girls came by, got them to model the new Pipeline Posse bikini's.

Anyway, I kind of got my hands full right now...

...but I still want to hear what's on your mind, what you think or whatever, so leave a comment.

I thought I would take this oppurtunity to make it clear, that I am a professional surf photorapher. My clients are usually surf magazines and the surf companies that advertise in those magazines.

My Canon 600mm telephoto lens [link] is the backbone of my photography. It allows me to capture full frame shots of my subject, in crisp clean detail.

There are several basic types of shots that I like to capture.
Powermoves - this covers a wide variety of moves, such as snaps, carves, floaters, cutbacks, gouges, straight ups and so on.

Tuberides - it's by far, the most respectable aspect of surfing...and the bigger, the better.

Airials - these are my favorite.

Big Waves - usually produces very dramatic moments.

other - includes bodyboarding, longboarding, waveskiing, empty waves, etc.

I usually shoot in the horizontal position, but sometimes I like to shoot verticle.
:thumb56210212:

Here is a shot using the 600mm with the 1.4 extender.

For the most part, when using the 600mm lens, you need good lighting.
Its really hard to get good shots on an overcast day. There are exceptions to the rule...here is one.

Back lit shots look cool, especially for airs.

That was a quick breakdown of my photography using the 600mm lens. I will be dicussing other aspects of my photography in the up coming weeks, so please stay tuned. Thank you for reading...any comments or questions are welcome.

Aloha, Mana
There is a lot more to me and my photography than what I usually show on DA. Here is a glimpse into a typical week in the life of Mana.

Saturday, Sept. 8 - went surfing in the morning.

After surfing, had a little skateboarding photo session.
Later that night, I went to a fun house party, but I didn't take any photo's.

Wednesday, Sept. 12 - went to a nightclub.

They were playing some kool reggae music.

I liked this guys kool green shoes.

Thursday, Sept. 13 - finally, we got some small waves, time to do some real work.

I like the kool background that town provides.

There was an added bonus of an Airshow with some Airforce jets flying over.

Surfers would we blazing by one way and jets would be blazing by another way...it was an awsome site.

I stayed in the water for 4 and a half hours shooting photo's.

My sunscreen washed off after the first hour, leaving my face exposed to the sun for over 3 hours, but I figure it was worth it.

Friday, Sept. 14 - grand opening of my friends mixed martial arts fight shop.

This is UFC superstar BJ Penn signing autographs.

There was some gorgeous women there too.

Saturday, Sept. 15 - photo shoot at a nightclub.

I borrowed my friends studio lighting set up to capture some top quality lifestyle shots.

Took lots of fun shots.

So this is how I do things...what happens next week is anybody's guess.

All questions and comments are welcome and appreciated.
Aloha, Mana
